Avfallsreduksjon og gjenbruk er de mest foretrukne alternativene, etterfulgt av resirkulering og energigjenvinning. Prinsippet inneb\u00e6rer at de som produserer avfall, enten den opprinnelige avfallsprodusenten eller de n\u00e5v\u00e6rende\/tidligere avfallsinnehaverne, skal betale for avfallsh\u00e5ndteringen.<\/p><p>Rammedirektivet for avfall er minstekrav for h\u00e5ndtering av avfall i EU- og E\u00d8S-landene. I Norge legger forskrift om gjenvinning og behandling av avfall f\u00f8ringer for behandling av farlig avfall. Dette gjelder n\u00e5r skolen skal kvitte seg med kjemikalier og rester fra for eksempel naturfag- og kjemifors\u00f8k.
