About CheSSE

Online Resources for Chemical Safety in Science Education, CheSSE, was a three-year ERASMUS+ project running from 2020 to 2023. Additional funding from ERASMUS+ has been granted to revise chesse.org to comply with the new EU chemical regulations and to create educational materials to the site. The follow-up project will run from 2024 to 2027.

The overarching goal is to develop concise, up-to date, online materials about chemical safety in science education in schools. A desired long-term outcome is that teachers feel competent and safe when handling chemicals and managing school laboratories.

The material in the project is developed through discussions and workshops, and published on this website, chesse.org, in the participating organizations’ languages and in English. Collaboration with the school partner, teachers and reference groups plays a critical role in shaping and refining the project content, ensuring that it meets the needs and expectations of all stakeholders.

ASE Evaluated 2022 logoIn October 2022, ASE performed an ASE Green Tick quality assurance of chesse.org. This assessment identified areas of strength and weakness in the content and will be used in the revision of website. The ASE Green Tick does not imply that ASE endorses this website; rather, the report provides suggestions on potential applications and how chesse.org may contribute to teaching and learning.

Target Groups

The primary target groups of the project are science and chemistry teachers, heads of schools and science teacher educators. The content can also be useful for national and regional agencies that support and regulate the use of chemicals in science and chemistry education. The development of the material takes place in collaboration with these various stakeholders.
