Checklists and Tools

Quick access to all of chesse.org’s tools, templates and checklists.

For all practical work that includes hazardous chemicals or hazardous equipment, the teacher or a laboratory technician is required to do a risk assessment.

Further reading: Risk Assessment

Chemicals in the science classroom must be labelled in accordance to EU regulations. If you make your own solutions, they should also be labelled to allow identification and proper handling.

Further reading: Labelling

The school is legally required to maintain an updated chemical inventory – a collection of safety data sheets for all chemicals and solutions used.

All schools are legally required to dispose of chemicals in accordance to regulations and in a way that ensures proper waste management.

When it comes to taking care of the chemistry lab, many tasks do not fit into teacher’s ordinary pedagogical work. To ensure that chemical safety is assured in the science department, it is a good idea that the management of the school (e.g. the principal) specifies these tasks in writing.

Examples of tasks that can be distributed to a suitably qualified person at the science department:

  • Organising the health and safety assessment of the department
  • Safe storage of chemicals used in education
  • Inspection and maintenance of the equipment in the science department

When an employee is assigned a safety task, it is the employer’s responsibility to provide the resources required to do the work.

We recommend that students receive a course in basic laboratory safety at the beginning of each year, adapted to the needs and activities of the age group. This includes learning the rules that apply in the science or chemistry laboratory and how to read and interpret hazard pictograms. Making the rules together with the students through discussion can make them easier to remember and increase compliance.

It can also be a good idea to train students in specific laboratory techniques, for example correct use of gas burners or pipetting techniques, to ensure correct handling and minimise the risk of accidents. In such cases, awarding a certificate or a badge as proof of completed training can serve to document the student’s mastery of practical skills.

Every task involving the management of risks needs to be subject to a documented risk assessment. The level of detail in the risk assessment should be proportionate to the risk. If different tasks involve the same type of chemical risks, risk assessments can be assessed together.

A risk assessment of practical work requires three steps:

  • Identify the hazards associated with the chemicals, equipment and procedures you are planning.
  • Assess the risks connected with each part of the experiment, demonstration or preparation.
  • Decide what precautionary measures should be in place to eliminate the hazard, or to control the risks you have identified.

The risk assessment should be documented, and include:

  • the class, laboratory or classroom concerned
  • all the hazards that you identified
  • the levels of risk associated with these hazards
  • the situations where there is need to eliminate or reduce a risk
  • the measures that should be taken to eliminate the hazard or control the risk
  • which equipment should be available during the experiment or demonstration, or on standby in case of spillage or accident
  • the emergency procedures in case of an accident

Hazard Information on Common Chemicals

The list of chemicals below contains hazard information on some common solutions used in chemistry education. The hazard information depends on the concentration of the solution, so make sure to choose the right concentration interval.

If the substance is not in the list below, try to find a safety data sheet for a solution with the same substance and concentration. Use the hazard pictogram(s), signal word and hazard statements in the safety data sheet on the label. Choose the precautionary statements that are relevant to how the solution will be used in the classroom. If a safety data sheet with the right concentration is not available, use a safety data sheet for a more concentrated solution or for the pure substance. In this case, this may over classify the solution. However, better safe than sorry.

The CheSSE Label Generator

The label generator generates labels with the appropriate label elements. These are based on harmonized classification and may differ slightly from information in safety data sheets from different suppliers.

When clicking on a chemical in the list, the classification for different concentration intervals is shown. It is then possible to generate a label by clicking “generate label” for the right concentration interval. The generated label can be copied and pasted for example into a textbox in a Word document. In this way it is possible to print several labels on the same page.
